…fainéant

September 1, 2011 Leave a comment Go to comments

It has been a while since I have posted anything new. Between life changing events and mini-natural disasters, its been a busy few weeks! One of the events that I’ll briefly discuss was my experience in moving homes. The drama of having a closing on my home sale and on the home buy within a few hours not withstanding, I learned (was reminded) of a few apparent truths. Keep in mind, this is related to my personal moving experience

1) In general, service people do not want to do their jobs. No matter what they say when they take your money…they do not want to do their jobs. This is truly sad, however, very consistent with 90% of my experiences over the past few years.

2) Given the opportunity, most people will try to cheat and deceive you for personal gains.

3) People are generally incompetent in most service industries, often relying on independent jobs rather than building relationships, knowing that repeat business is not part of their strategy.

4) Ratings sites are not an accurate representation of vendor performance. Angie’s List, ServiceMagic… are useless as no one will give a vendor a bad review as they know where they live, have a check from them…etc.

5) You are the ultimate expert and if you do not understand something – learn before you hire. There are plenty of resources out there to help arm you with the facts on most if not all projects you wish to undertake.

In short – we need to go back to the good old days where people just knew how to do things by learning. We have become dependent on so many external service providers, that we have lost a sense of self-reliance.

This needs to change.

…make wise choices,

-sk
